Dear Members of the Prenton RUFC Community Hub,
With the start of July and the new rugby season on the horizon, I thought I would write a few
words as your new Club Chairman.
Firstly, I would like to thank the membership for giving me the opportunity to undertake this
special leadership role at our great club. Secondly, I would like to personally thank our
outgoing Chairman, Michael Cavanagh, for all of his hard work over the past 13 years.
During that time, he has guided us through some difficult periods as well as some incredibly
exciting ones, and we all owe him a great deal of gratitude for his dedication and
commitment.
As mentioned, pre-season is now upon us, and what an exciting season we have ahead.
Having been crowned league champions and narrowly missing out in the cup final, our 1st
XV has taken the opportunity to step back into the RFU league structure after seven years in
the North West leagues. This is an exciting step forward and gives us the chance to build on
our recent success as we continue our ambition of climbing the rugby pyramid.
We are delighted that our coaching team, led by Barry Rylance, will remain in place, with
Jack Mason continuing as Club Captain to help drive the team forward this season.
Our Wolfpack 2nd XV will continue competing in the North West leagues and will be
looking to build on a solid campaign last year under the leadership of co-captains Jay
Gardiner and Connor McKay.
We are also excited to be launching a new Women’s section, which we hope will continue to
grow over the coming months. I would like to thank Scarlett Steer for coming on board to
help establish this exciting new chapter for the club. I would encourage everyone to spread
the word to female relatives, friends and colleagues who may be interested in getting
involved. Let’s work together to make this section of the club a real success.
Our junior section is another area we are keen to develop. Terry and Leigh would welcome
any support, and I encourage members to bring their children, grandchildren, family members
and friends along to experience everything the club has to offer.
On 27th June, we held an incredible day in honour of our good friend Barry Miller, who
continues his courageous fight against brain cancer. The support shown that day
demonstrated exactly what Prenton RUFC is all about—friendship, community and standing
by one another when it matters most.
Our Social Committee continues to work tirelessly to organise events throughout the year,
and I encourage everyone to support them whenever possible. We have a clubhouse to be
proud of, so let’s make the most of it and continue to make it the heart of our club.
There will be more news and updates over the summer months, but for now I would simply
like to thank you for your continued support. Every player, volunteer, sponsor, supporter and
member plays an important part in our success. Whatever you can contribute, it all makes a
difference, and together we can continue to build an even stronger future for Prenton RUFC.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to seeing you all at the club throughout the
season.
Yours in Rugby,
Gareth Knapman
Club Chairman
